In this article, I will walk you through some of the very cool features of Canva Pro and how to know if upgrading to the Pro version is right for you.
What is Canva?
Been living in a cave and not sure what Canva is?
It is a drag-and-drop design tool that lets you create pretty much any type of visual content with ease.
Canva can be used by anyone who wants to create visual designs: marketers, bloggers, designers, teachers, students, anyone.
Even with a free subscription you have access to a huge collection of templates including social media, posters, blog banners, resumes, presentations and many, many more.
If you have never used Canva before or are currently on the free version and are wondering what all the hype is about, read on to find out!
How is Canva Pro different from the free Canva version?
Canva Pro is the premium plan of Canva that offers additional features like unlimited storage and access to high-quality stock photos and videos.
The Pro version basically gives you as the designer more features and accessibility – helping you to better organise, optimise and export your designs.

Pretty great right?
But now you are probably asking … yeah, but, what do I need all that for? Do I really need to pay for Canva Pro?
The answer to that question likely depends on what you are currently using Canva for.
If you are an entrepreneur, are starting or running your own online biz, a social media manager, marketer, writer, just about anyone who has the need to create visual imagery for your own brand or someone else’s brand, then you are likely going to find benefit with these added features.
Here are a few examples:
Access to millions of high-quality stock photos inside Canva Pro
In May 2019 Canva acquired Pexels and Pixabay stock sites, two of the biggest free stock content sites in the world.
They then introduced a “Netflix-style” subscription model inside Canva to access the stock libraries.
You have access to free stock photos within the free version of Canva, but with Canva Pro you get access to thousands more, high-quality stock images. And if those still weren’t enough, for only $12.95/month you get access to all of the millions of images in the Canva stock library.
Unlike other stock photo sites that could potentially charge you hundreds of dollars for just one image, Canva believes that everyone should have access to amazing photos.
Melanie Perkins, CEO and co-founder at Canva said:
“We believe everyone should have access to great design ingredients for their visuals; this is why free content will always play a central role in Canva’s vision of democratizing design.”
Downloading and exporting
In Canva Pro you have more options for downloading and exporting your designs – giving you more creative license over your work.
You can choose to download as a jpeg or higher quality png. You can also choose the size of the jpeg file. To add to this, you can also download your designs as a GIF or animation. This feature is fantastic for creating visually appealing and engaging social media content.
The Canva Pro version also allows you to download your designs as a transparent background. The flexibility and professionalism this provides is second to none. I use this a lot on my website to create custom text headers and titles.
With this feature, you can quickly and easily resize or create a copy of your designs.
This is particularly useful to any of you that are creating social posts. Created a great product post for IG and want a similarly themed graphic for your IG stories? Easy! Simply resize your 1080×1080 design into the IG story size. You will need to move around some of your elements in the layout, but no more starting over from scratch with this feature. Save yourself hours of time redesigning!
This is also a great way to create lots of content for social media, without taking hours to do it! Start with one branded design for IG and then resize for FB, stories, Linkedin or even Pinterest!
Unlimited folders for storing designs, photos and logos
This is one of the Canva Pro features that is often undervalued. Whether you are a solopreneur or a busy social media manager or just love creating designs for your non-biz related fun, folders can save you so much time.
Using the folders (and now the sub-folders) you can sort and store stock photos, designs, elements, your own uploaded photos and logos.
No more wasting time scrolling through hundreds of uploads or past designs. Everything is sorted, labelled and ready to use, according to whatever organisational system you prefer!
Brand kit management
This is a real time lifesaver when you are doing your content creation. With the brand kit feature, you can upload your brand colour palette, colours and signature fonts. When you are creating or editing your designs, no more copy and pasting hex codes, resetting fonts and sizes, it’s all at your fingertips and a single click.
Now although you can only upload a brand kit for one brand (colours, fonts, logos) you can still upload other colour palettes and logos as well. This is great if you are a marketer, social media manager, collaborator who often works with more than one brand at once.
An even more exciting option is that you can upload fonts in the brand kit. So although you get access to over 500 hundred premium fonts with Canva Pro, sometimes you may have just that one special font you love or you are a font junkie like me and just like collecting fonts.
You can upload these fonts (be sure you’ve got the right license and usage rights to use these fonts. Not sure if you do? Read this article here to find out more) and they will appear at the top of the list in your font drop-down menu.
Not sure how to upload a font? Watch this quick video to find out how.
There really are many more amazing features in Canva Pro but if I outlined all of them here, this blog post would take you 3 days to read!
What I suggest is that if you are curious and want to see for yourself if the Canva Pro features are worth the $12.95/month, then try it first. Canva gives you a free 30-day trial with access to all of the Pro features. Then if you are hooked and realise you can’t live without it, you can sign up and join us in Pro Land. If it’s not for you, it’s an easy cancel and you move on with your life.
